I’m not a fan of winter travel—by which I mean I tend to avoid places with chilly temperatures. The end of the year usually finds me heading back to Miami or Nigeria, where December unfolds in sun-soaked days with no need for warm layers.
Packing jackets and thinking of how to layer clothing does not excite me, what excites me is visiting New York. So, even when the opportunity to visit came with the promise of icy weather, I couldn’t bring myself to say no. Despite chilling winds, unexpected rains, and near-freezing temperatures, I found myself enjoying—however reluctantly—winter in the city.
I watched from Little Island as sunset darkened the Hudson River to a shimmering indigo, visited the glinting Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, strolled down streets filled with dancing lights and holiday baubles in Christmas reds and greens, sipped marshmallow-filled hot chocolate and spiced wine, and shopped for handmade trinkets at the Union Square holiday market. You could not have convinced me I wasn’t the lead in my own romantic Christmas movie.

New York has long been one of my favorite places to visit—winter weather notwithstanding—and this past holiday trip was so charming that I might just brave the cold again next year.

Good To Know
Where I stayed: The DREAM Downtown, and The Standard.
Getting around: Ubers can get expensive, especially in Manhattan. I got around mostly with the subway. Tip: Google Maps is a great resource for navigating the subway, just plug in your destination, and you’ll get detailed directions on how to get where you need to go.
My favorite eats: New York is home to many wonderful places to eat at! My favorite spots from this visit were (in no particular order): Kubeh, Barbuto, Brooklyn Bagel, and CAVA.

Your winter New York recap does sound like scenes from a Christmas rom-com! I too won’t pass up on an opportunity to visit a dreamy location despite the cold.
It really did feel so romantic! Thanks for reading! I appreciate you.
