Garden Variety: New Orleans, LA

Day 2

I’m up, but my alarm hasn’t gone off yet. I close my eyes to try and induce sleep, but my brain has different ideas.

The sun woke up hours ago, so it’s my turn. I say a quick prayer and roll over to the edge of the bed to glance at my phone screen. No messages, but a lot of important emails that I begrudgingly start to reply. The people at work could care less that I’m on vacation. In about an hour, I’ve had it with staring at my screen, so it’s time to get ready for the day.

An arduous google search through blogs and reviews on TripAdvisor had provided us with a list of things to do in New Orleans. For day 2, I suggested that we visit the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden which is right next to the New Orleans Museum of Art. I don’t know that it was a great idea to skip the art museum, but I’m certain the sculpture garden was a wonderful choice.

Tip: If you’re looking to be frugal on your trip, the sculpture garden is a great choice because entry is free.

Although the sunlight didn’t seem deterred by any clouds, there was a slight chill in the air. It wasn’t enough to make walking around the garden uncomfortable, though.

We took our time walking through, stopping to read the engravings on the sculptures, take photos and simply enjoy each other’s company. I’m filled with nostalgia as I write this because it was such a beautiful day. It’s one I wish I could snap my fingers to go back to.

After the sculpture garden, we headed to canal street in a cab which was probably a bad idea for expense reasons. We could have taken the trolleys (for less than $3) but it was cold and neither of us wanted to figure out the trolley route.

Canal street is what one would consider the touristy part of New Orleans. It has a large mall and is lined with hotels, banks, palm-trees (reminiscent of Florida), and restaurants on each side. Here you’ll likely find people strolling with suitcases or walking to bourbon street and the rest of the french quarter.

We spent about an hour here before walking back to Café du Monde for beignets en route the house.

The sculpture garden was my favorite part of the entire trip! I would have loved to go on the little red train that was making rounds on the property, but it apparently wasn’t taking passengers.
