An Afternoon in DUMBO, NY.

Rewind to about a month ago – during a trip to freezing, windy NYC– when I thought it’d be a good idea to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. You’d think something was pulling me towards it, or that I hadn’t done it before.

The weather had been dreary since I arrived in the northeast, so once the sun dared to shine through the clouds, my boyfriend and I were out of the house. Dressed in a turtleneck, light pink pants, knee-high boots that wouldn’t stay on my knees, and a thick jacket, it was probably the first time my outfit was appropriate for the cold weather. Despite the wind, we walked across the Brooklyn bridge, stopped to take pictures (see also: I stopped to take photos and have them taken of me, all the while maneuvering through people and cyclists). There’s a lane for people on foot and people on bikes and they’re the same size, so we had to walk with caution to avoid any collisions.When we stepped off the bridge, a short walk led us to Atrium DUMBO, our lunch spot. Given the weather and Atrium’s stellar ratings, I expected it to be packed, but luckily it wasn’t. We were seated quickly at the bar with an unobstructed view of the kitchen, out of which came several plates of avocado toast and chicken and waffles. Assuming at least one of these was a bestseller, we ordered chicken and waffles, and biscuits and deviled eggs.

The food was delicious and expensive, especially for how small the portions were. It wasn’t long before I was hungry again. In the hour we spent eating, the wind had picked up enough speed to make a leisurely walk out of the question; so we canceled our plans to visit Smorgasburg food market and headed for Jane’s carousel. I was curious to see the merry-go-round that has a view of both the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. Being the kid that I am, I also paid $2 to ride on it.Childish cravings satisfied, we braved the wind to cross the Brooklyn bridge back to the other side of the city. By this time my face was so frozen that I needed to thaw. Luckily, the train station was a short walk away and I found myself unusually happy to be inside a NYC subway.

Have you walked across the Brooklyn Bridge? This was my second time doing it, so I took the opportunity to explore the neighborhood close to it – DUMBO (down under the Manhattan bridge overpass). I’d like to come back in the summer to visit Smorgasburg and try as much as food as possible!
