Old Friends, New Memories.

On November 25th – two days after Thanksgiving, we met up with an old friend, Vanessa, for brunch at Café Intermezzo in Atlanta’s midtown district. I hadn’t seen Vanessa in 8 years, and as we chatted over tea and mint julep, I realized the significance of how much time had passed.

8 years ago we were teenagers trying to escape the confines of our boarding school as quickly as possible; now there we were at brunch, thousands of miles from said school, independent, talking about our lives as young adults. It felt surreal.VSCO Cam-12.jpgFour of us in our party had gone to the same boarding school, so the trip seemed like a mini-reunion even before we met with Vanessa. The conversation flowed over delicious french toast, stuffed crepes, and other brunch food until our plates were empty.VSCO Cam-15.jpgVSCO Cam-13.jpgVSCO Cam-14.jpgVSCO Cam-1.jpgWe hugged Vanessa goodbye and started down the street to rent some bikes. She had suggested we ride through the BeltLine to Ponce City Market instead of taking an Uber as planned. I wasn’t going to turn down the scenic route, and no one else seemed inclined to either, so we rented six bicycles, turned on a GPS and started our trip.VSCO Cam-2.jpgVSCO Cam-3.jpgVSCO Cam-10.jpgWe arrived Ponce City Market to find there were no vacant spaces to park our bikes, not within a mile of the market. We had no option but to ride to the nearest docking stations. VSCO Cam-6.jpg

By the time we reached the closest one, the sky had changed from shades of orange to black and we were exhausted from what was mostly an uphill ride. We called off our visit to the market and headed home to change for our last stop of the night: dinner at Fogo de Chao.

I always try to connect with friends when I travel. I find that it’s a good way to either re-establish or strengthen relationships. It’s even better when the friends know more about the area than I do and can recommend the best ways for me to enjoy it!

Thank you, Vanessa.

There’s nothing better than reconnecting with old friends! Love the idea of cycling through a city, it’s unfortunate that I do not know how to ride a bike! xx

Lovely post and photos! In December I reconnected with an old friend – a Senegalese school/ classmate I had not seen since I was 14-15. I had no clue she lives in Dakar until another friend’s mom mentioned it to me. It’s a shame because we’re “friends” on Facebook and I’ve thought about her over the years but did not reach out… Now – especially after reading your post – I am motivated to reach out to a lot of people, especially when they cross my mind.

Thank you babe! It happens like that sometimes. Sometimes I’ll have left a city before I realize that I know someone that lives there so I try to make a conscious effort. Aww, nice!!
