Hometown Tourist in Downtown Miami

I’ve moved around a bit. In the past 7 years, I’ve lived in Miami, New Jersey, and Tampa. I’ll sometimes get asked why I ever moved to the northeast. Why would I ever leave the warmth of Florida? Wasn’t it hard moving away from home (Miami)? 1) I don’t know really and 2) I’ve been living away from home since I was 9, blame it on boarding school. So, No. 

Now I’m back living in Miami but I know I won’t be here permanently so I’ve had this urge to do and see as much as possible before I move. Growing up, my Dad took us around Miami A LOT. We learned how to ride our bikes at the neighborhood parks, went on cruises and boat rides & spent time at some of Miami’s beaches.

From the portfolio of events in my childhood, I found ideas to entertain my now young adult self, and friends who would come to visit. Although there are some classic goodies (heading to South Beach for example), new places and experiences pop up all the time, and my age also affords me the opportunity to do more than I could as a kid.

Today’s post features me & my sister from the day we spent at Peréz Art Museum in downtown Miami.

Tip: This museum is ~8-10 minutes away from Wynwood – Miami’s Art & Design District and about a 5-minute walk to Bayside Harbor & Marketplace. If you’re heading to Miami, downtown is a good place to start your trip. 

Before we walked into the museum, we stopped like everyone else to play with the installation of plastic noodle-like tubings outside. It’s so popular that we were just trying not to bump into other people, but it also made for a cute photo opportunity.Inside, the museum was filled with people. I was genuinely surprised. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a museum and seen that many people. There was no event going on, just people looking and taking photos of art. I may have underestimated the popularity of art museums.

 

Outside the crowds made more sense because the museum has a large stairwell that faces bayside harbor, so when the sun is out -like it was on this day- it’s a nice place to chill. That is, until either the heat or humidity gets unbearable.My sister & I skipped the people-filled stairwell to sit on the concrete slabs next to the ocean. We hung out here for a bit, then walked to Bayside Marketplace for lunch & drinks.The only problem I have with eating so close to the water is birds. I have an irrational phobia so I’m always looking over my shoulder when I come here. They (the birds) haven’t stopped me from going to Bayside, so, for now, its Tiese: 1|Birds: 0

I just found out that Peréz Art Museum hosts happy hour events with live music on their harborfront terrace, which means one of these weeks I’m going back. If you’re interested, their calendar has all the upcoming events.
