Eating Through NYC: Part 1

Hi there!

If you’re reading this post, just go and get a snack. Unless reading about food doesn’t make you hungry, then carry on snack-less.

Every time I’m in New York City, I like to find new places to eat because the city is littered with great spots that serve delicious bites.

In fact, the first thing I’m excited for when I travel is cuisine. I have a friend who always has a “dine-out” budget for when she travels. I like being around her.

So, I’m about to put my money where my mouth is and ask you to eat from / at these places when you’re in the city. NOW, by no means are these the BEST places to eat in the entire city (I’m no food expert, just an expert at eating) but they are spots I would go back to, so I think it’s worth the share.

For Savory (Lunch + Dinner Vibe)

Great Jones CafeDoes anyone else feel like sometimes the best places to eat are the ones you can walk right past without noticing? I do, and that’s what Great Jones Cafe is. My sister took me to this little hole in the wall that serves mainly Cajun cuisine. If popcorn shrimp, jambalaya, and corn bread sound great to you, you might want to give this one a try.

Jambalaya with corn bread – not pretty but DELICIOUS

The Jambalaya had a porridge-like consistency that I’m not used to, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t the best Jambalaya I’d ever had. My sister had the popcorn shrimp sandwich which didn’t sound spectacular until I took a bite; you get a wonderful punch of flavor that keeps you going back for more.

CATCH NYC– After having sushi from here the last time I was in NYC, I knew we had to come back. Okay maybe I also wanted to watch the waiter set fire to my sushi right in front of me, but that’s beside the point.

Order the CATCH roll if you go. It’s the best one we’ve had so far

In addition to Sushi, we had crispy chicken and scallop gnocchi for main courses.

I ordered the Gnocchi with Parmesan Truffle Fries (So yummy!)

Eating at CATCH might burn a hole in your pocket, so tread lightly. I would say order some sushi and dessert to share to offset some of that cost.

For my favorite part – Sweet treats

Levain Bakery – You might want to head to the one further uptown to avoid the VERY lengthy lines at this hole-in-the-wall bakery. We got this recommendation and didn’t follow it. Don’t be like us.

The cookies are warm, moist and absolutely delicious but I have a problem with a place that doesn’t serve a traditional chocolate chip!

Magnolia Bakery- I’m squealing as I write this because Magnolia is probably my favorite bakery on this list. Their cakes and cupcakes are simply decadent. I don’t have any pictures for this one, but don’t let that deter you.

Dough- Krispy Kreme doughnuts still have the number 1 spot in my heart, but sitting comfortably in second place is Dough. I’ve run out of ways to say things are delicious so just take my word for it and try these.

La Maison Du Chocolat – This upscale bakery serves up delicious sweet treats of the Parisian variety. I was gifted a box of their macaroons and fell in love instantly. On my visit, I had a chocolate tart. This wasn’t what I wanted, but it was all they had left (talk about popular).

CATCH NYC – This one is back again on the dessert list, because this restaurant is equally (perhaps more) popular for their dessert.

Our first time here, we had the ‘hit me’ chocolate cake. Our second time around, we tried the cinnamon roll donut.

If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll love this one.

If this post has you looking for something to eat, sorry, I ain’t sorry (No, no, hell nah!) . Haha! Have any of you eaten from one of these places? What did you have? Leave me a comment to let me know!

Until next Friday,

Thanks for reading!

  3. We love Levain! We probably prefer the cake doughnuts at Doughnut Plant, but that’s kind of a personal taste thing. Will definitely have to check out that Cinnamon Roll Donut, tho!
